Light Induced Electron Transfer Reactions of Metal Complexes

چکیده

Properties of the excited states of tris(2,2'—bipyridine) and tris(l,lO—phenanthroline) complexes of chromium(III), iron(II), ruthenium(II), osmium(II), rhodium(III), and iridium(III) are described. The electron transfer reactions of the ground and excited states are discussed and interpreted in terms of the driving force for the reaction and the distortions of the excited states relative to the corresponding ground states. General considerations relevant to the conversion of light into chemical energy are presented and progress in the use of polypyridine complexes to effect the light induced decomposition of water into hydrogen and oxygen is reviewed.

Electron transfer and catalysis with high-valent metal-oxo complexes.

High-valent metal-oxo complexes are produced by reductive activation of dioxygen via reduction of metal complexes with reductants and dioxygen. Photoinduced electron transfer from substrates to metal complexes with dioxygen also leads to the generation of high-valent metal-oxo complexes that can oxygenate substrates. In such a case metal complexes act as a photocatalyst to oxygenate substrates ...

Photochemistry of Transition Metal Complexes Induced by Outer-Sphere Charge Transfer Excitation

The intermolecular (outer sphere, OS) interaction of a reducing and an oxidizing metal complex generates a new optical transition involving charge transfer (CT) from the electron donor to the acceptor. OS C T transitions are classified according to the redox site (metal or ligand). Generally, the interaction between donor and acceptor is facilitated by ion pairs consisting of an oxidizing compl...

Emission Spectroscopy as a Probe into Photoinduced Intramolecular Electron Transfer in Polyazine Bridged Ru(II),Rh(III) Supramolecular Complexes

Steady-state and time-resolved emission spectroscopy are valuable tools to probe photochemical processes of metal-ligand, coordination complexes. Ru(II) polyazine light absorbers are efficient light harvesters absorbing in the UV and visible with emissive ³MLCT excited states known to undergo excited state energy and electron transfer. Changes in emission intensity, energy or band-shape, as wel...

Multielectron-transfer reactions at single Cu(II) centers embedded in polyoxotungstates driven by photo-induced metal-to-metal charge transfer from anchored Ce(III) to framework W(VI).

Using carbon monoxide as a probe molecule for the oxidation state of Cu ions, we demonstrated that anchored polynuclear charge-transfer complexes consisting of Ce(III) ions and Cu(II)-substituted Keggin-type polyoxotungstates function as efficient visible-light-driven multielectron-transfer catalysts.
